Market Outlook

Although the drug’s patents and exclusivity have expired, sales for Amaryl remain strong. Sales are expected to slowly decline but should remain above the $500 million mark for the foreseeable future, mainly buffered by international markets, as sulfonylurea have lost popularity in the United States for various safety and efficacy reasons. Impending GLP-1 approvals could impact this figure in the coming years, especially when considering their safety when used in conjunction with Amaryl. As of December 2008, Amaryl was listed as the leading oral ant diabetic drug in Japan in terms of number of patients treated.

The following is an excerpt from Chapter 4, “Physician Perspectives on the Diabetes Market.”

Greatest Unmet Needs: Type 1 Diabetes

Analysts collected physicians’ views on the greatest needs of both types of diabetes. Figure 4.5 shows an overall breakout of the greatest unmet needs for Type 1. Forty-four percent of responding physicians feel that new science is the greatest unmet need. The next greatest need, according to survey data, is patient adherence: 26% of respondents believe it the most pressing impediment to better treatment. Of course, new science that allows for easier, more convenient or more effective glucose control could go a long ways toward improving adherence. While only 12% of physicians list glucose control explicitly as the greatest need, this small share could stem from many physicians are looking at a bigger picture of glucose control through new science, rather than glucose control not being an issue.
